The Libertarian Party of Chicago Condemns Racism, Violence in Wake of Charlottesville Rally and Attack

The Libertarian Party of Chicago remains a strong adherent of the principle, embodied in the Constitution, that all human beings are created equal. The idea that race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin justifies limiting the unalienable rights of any person is both abhorrent to Libertarianism, and contrary to the founding values of the United States. As the Libertarian Party platform states: “We condemn bigotry as irrational and repugnant.”

It is a fundamental Libertarian principle that personal freedoms must be limited only when they intrude on the freedoms of others. Ideologies that promote violence are to be condemned. Calls to violence are to be silenced, and acts or credible threats of violence must be met with measures to neutralize the threat to life and liberty. Whether it is committed on religious, nationalist, racist or political grounds, aggressive violence has no place in a civilized society.

Therefore, The Libertarian Party of Chicago condemns the rally of racists and nationalists in Charlottesville this past Saturday and the lethal attack on counter-protesters. We call upon all local and national leaders to do the same. We are a nation built upon personal rights and freedoms which must not be abridged. Our leaders must take a principled stand against ideologies that seek to limit rights to a select few; and must continue to respect the freedoms that have made America great.
