The Libertarian Party of Chicago calls for immediate release of prisoners of conscience

CHICAGO, March 7th, 2017 – The Libertarian Party of Chicago (LPC), believing that freedom of thought is fundamental to Liberty, calls for the immediate release of Cuban libertarian activists Ubaldo Herrera Hernández, Manuel Velázquez Visea and other prisoners of conscience from incarceration.

On February 2nd, Herrera and Velázquez reportedly refused to show their IDs to State Security agents dressed in civilian clothing and were arrested, as reported by the PanAm Post.

The Libertarian Party of Nevada has been following the situation very closely. According to their latest update posted to their blog, “both men were indeed convicted on falsified charges, are in a labor prison.”

“Mises Cuba volunteer staff member and attorney Nelson Rodriguez Chartrand now confirms that both men were convicted, and now face the additional criminal charge of distributing enemy propaganda,” the post also explained.

“As a Libertarian, I am disheartened by the news coming out of Cuba. These men were peaceful and harmed no one. Like many other dissidents around the world, they are political prisoners whose only crime is holding beliefs that challenge the status quo. In this case, it was free markets and Liberty,” says LPC Chair Justin Tucker. “My thoughts are with these brave activists and their families. I ask that Libertarians join the fight to free these and other prisoners of conscience.”

LPC joins several LP state parties and the Partido Libertario (P-LIB) of Spain in the Libertarian Party of Nevada’s call to:

  1. Condemn the Cuban government and the Communist Party of Cuba, and demand the safe release of the libertarian prisoners,
  1. Ask the US State Department to place diplomatic pressure on Cuba for their release,
  1. Call Senators, Congressmen, Governors, and State Legislators to make their own statements of support for these political prisoners and to ask the State Department to diplomatically pressure the Cuban government. Find your Congressman and contact his or her office, and tweet at your governor,
  1. Directly contact Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Relations and demand the safe release of Ubaldo Herrera Hernández and Manuel Velázquez Visea. Send them a message on Facebook and tweet directly at them.

The Libertarian Party of Chicago encourages everyone to participate in efforts to bring attention to Herrera, Velázquez and other political prisoners, including contacting Amnesty International and other organizations to spotlight the situation. #TodosSomosMisesCuba
